چکیده

Motivated by a phenomenon of phase transition in a model of alignment of selfpropelled particles, we obtain a kinetic mean-field equation which is nothing more than the Smoluchowski equation on the sphere with dipolar potential. In this self-contained article, using only basic tools, we analyze the dynamics of this equation in any dimension. We first prove global wellposedness of this equation, starting with an initial condition in any Sobolev space. We then compute all possible steady states. There is a threshold for the noise parameter: over this threshold, the only equilibrium is the uniform distribution, and under this threshold, the other equilibria are the Fisher–von Mises distributions with arbitrary direction and a concentration parameter determined by the intensity of the noise. For any initial condition, we give a rigorous proof of convergence of the solution to a steady state as time goes to infinity. In particular, when the noise is under the threshold and with nonzero initial mean velocity, the solution converges exponentially fast to a unique Fisher– von Mises distribution. We also found a new conservation relation, which can be viewed as a convex quadratic entropy when the noise is above the threshold. This provides a uniform exponential rate of convergence to the uniform distribution. At the threshold, we show algebraic decay to the uniform distribution.

Phase transition of the dry friction between crystalline surfaces induced by normal load

A major source of energy dissipation and surface wear is the kinetic friction at the interfaces of sliding bodies. Traditionally, on a macroscopic scale, this undesirable effect is reduced with lubricating the surfaces by introducing oil into their interface. An interesting phenomenon, called superlubricity, has been reported on a nanometer scale where dry (without lubricant oil) fruition and w...

Novel type of phase transition in a system of self-driven particles.

A simple model with a novel type of dynamics is introduced in order to investigate the emergence of self-ordered motion in systems of particles with biologically motivated interaction. In our model particles are driven with a constant absolute velocity and at each time step assume the average direction of motion of the particles in their neighborhood with some random perturbation (η) added. We ...

Effects of coupling on turbulent gas-particle boundary layer flows at borderline volume fractions using kinetic theory

This study is concerned with the prediction of particles’ velocity in a dilute turbulent gas-solidboundary layer flow using a fully Eulerian two-fluid model. The closures required for equationsdescribing the particulate phase are derived from the kinetic theory of granular flows. Gas phaseturbulence is modeled by one-equation model and solid phase turbulence by MLH theory. Resultsof one-way and...

Macroscopic Limits and Phase Transition in a System of Self-propelled Particles

We investigate systems of self-propelled particles with alignment interaction. Compared to previous work (Degond and Motsch, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 18:1193–1215, 2008a; Frouvelle, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci., 2012), the force acting on the particles is not normalized, and this modification gives rise to phase transitions from disordered states at low density to aligned states at hi...

Transition in Iran’s Electricity Market Considering the Policies on Elimination of Electricity Subsidies: System Dynamics Application

Because of electricity subsidies, electricity price in Iran is much lower than its real value, and the growth of electricity demand is much more than its rational rate, which in turn implies ever increasing investment in the electricity section by the Government. Therefore, the recent Government policies are based on elimination of electricity subsidies, followed by commissioning complete elect...

CFD Modeling of the Feed Distribution System of a Gas-Solid Reactor

Granular flow simulation using CFD has received a lot of attention in recent years. In such cases, CFD is either, coupled with Discrete Element Method (DEM) techniques for appropriate incorporation of inter-particle collisions, or the Eulerian CFD approach is used in which granular particles are treated as they were fluid. In the present study, a CFD analysis was performed...
